  • Bizarre Indonesian Train Track Therapy

Indonesians lie on train tracks for medical therapy. Some Indonesians take a radical approach to help with their ailments. Called 'track therapy', residents decide to lie down across railroad tracks, believing that low-voltage electric current in the lines cure them when it passes through their bodies. Both adults and children have taken part in the craze, lying with their heads on one side of the track and resting their feet at the other. There is no electricity in the tracks, but there is a fatal dosage of currents in the overhead lines that give power to the trains. Due to the danger, local authorities have implemented fines and put up signs urging residents not to lie on the tracks. Some say it is absolute rubbish and likely to cause a heart attack, others claim to have cured all manner of ailments by doing it. Wide exterior of St. Carolus hospital 7. SOUNDBITE (English translation of Indonesian) Dr. Marius Widjajarta, medical expert: "The impact of the electrical flow can be a very big danger, especially when we don''t know how much voltage is passed. Zoom out from train running along tracks to people sitting on another set of tracks STORYLINE These Indonesians are going to extreme lengths to try and cure what ails them. They believe the electricity that passes through their bodies when they lie down on railroad tracks will restore their health. Their muscles twitch as the current flows Diabetes sufferer Sri Mulyati (sREE mool-YAH-tee) is among them. The 50-year-old says the electricity from the rails has helped her high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleeplessness... SOT But in the medical profession, people like dr. Marius Widjajarta (mah-REE-oos wee-DJAH-jartah) are skeptical.... SOT The state-run train company has been trying to discourage the practice, and lately there aren''t quite as many people out on the rails as there used to be, even if a dedicated few refuse to give it up. A sign warns against sitting or lying on the rails, saying it disturbs public order. Mateta Rizalulhaq (mah-TEH-tah ree-zahl-OOL-hak) speaks for the transportation department SOT Those who return to the rails despite the crackdown risk a prison sentence and a hefty fine. And they may be encouraging copycat behavior in the next generation. But they say they have no plans to stop what they call electric therapy -- they consider it the best and most affordable treatment available to them.
