Indonesians lie on train tracks for medical therapy. Some Indonesians take a radical approach to help with their ailments. Called 'track therapy', residents decide to lie down across railroad tracks, believing that low-voltage electric current in the lines cure them when it passes through their bodies. This idea comes from the tale of a paralyzed Chinese man who went to the tracks to commit suicide and was miraculously cured. This story was retold hundreds of times and serves as inspiration for those who believe the railroad tracks are their panacea. • Indonesians Use Railroad 'Therapy' (VIDEO)

wow JAKARTA, Indonesia — Ignoring the red-and-white danger sign, Sri Mulyati walks slowly to the train tracks outside Indonesia's bustling capital, lies down and stretches her body across the rails. Like the nearly dozen others lined up along the track, the 50-year-old diabetes patient has all but given up on doctors and can't afford the expensive medicines they prescribe. In her mind, she has only one option left: electric therapy. "I'll keep doing this until I'm completely cured," said Mulyati, twitching visibly as an oncoming passenger train sends an extra rush of current racing through her body. She leaps from tracks as it approaches and then, after the last carriage rattles slowly by, climbs back into position. Pseudo-medical treatments are wildly popular in many parts of Asia ...

  • Indonesia - shock therapy

In Indonesia they have discovered a new use for railway lines, already they are used as a thoroughfare by many but now locals are swearing by a new shock therapy that involves Laying across the rails (preferably when there is no train coming or it could be dangerous) and getting an electric shock from the return current generated by the electric trains. Some say it is absolute rubbish and likely to cause a heart attack, others claim to have cured all manner of ailments by doing it. Police have now made the practice illegal but that never stopped anyone before.

The travel every day and lay across the rails seeking a cure for diabetes or high blood pressure. Up to 50 people lay quietly while the electricity flows around them. They twitch when an electric surge from an approaching train pulses through their body. When the train nears, they jump up and lay back down once it passes. Despite the threat of arrest, these faithful remain committed to their therapy. Railroad shock therapy may sound extreme, but it sure beats eating dung from sacred cows, another form of pseudo-medical treatment popular in Asia. Both adults and children have taken part in the craze, lying with their heads on one side of the track and resting their feet at the other. There is no electricity in the tracks, but there is a fatal dosage of currents in the overhead lines that give power to the trains. Due to the danger, local authorities have implemented fines and put up signs urging residents not to lie on the tracks. In another bizarre and dangerous massage technique, some Taiwan businesses offer meat cleaver massage!. That's right; those giant, butcher type knives are being used to strike customers! If a man came at you with a meat cleaver, your first instinct would obviously be to run for your life. But not for the people of Hsinchu, in northern Taiwan. Because for them, being tapped with the sharp end of a cleaver is actually a form of therapy that is known to cure many ailments. They line up in large numbers to meet the therapist, who prepares by sharpening the instrument on a wet stone and rubbing iodine all over the blade. The Chinese knife massage is probably a treatment you'd only expect in hell, but in reality it's said to increase blood flow, release the body's stored energy and wash away harmful toxins. The treatment itself is pretty simple: all the therapist does is hold a couple of cleavers and strike the patient repeatedly with the sharp edge. No, don't be horrified, there's no blood involved. The trick is to bring down the cleaver with just the right amount of force, and then to not push or pull it once it touches skin. The up-and-down movement of the cleaver is said to release static energy, which leads to self- cure. "Chop, chop, chop, and the pain will go away," is the motto that the knife therapists use to convince clients. Such massages are organized in street markets and entail a customer siting in front of a crowd while a 'massage therapist' hitting the scared soul with the blade end of the cleaver

Pseudo-medical treatments are wildly popular in many parts of Asia -- where rumors about those miraculously cured after touching a magic stone or eating dung from sacred cows can attract hundreds, sometimes thousands. That may be especially true in Indonesia, where chronic funding shortages and chaotic decentralization efforts since the 1998 ouster of longtime dictator Suharto have left many disillusioned with the state-sponsored health system, said Marius Widjajarta, chairman of the Indonesian Health Consumers Empowerment Foundation. Medical experts say there is no evidence lying on the rails does any good. But Mulyati insists it provides more relief for her symptoms -- high-blood pressure, sleeplessness and high cholesterol -- than any doctor has since she was first diagnosed with diabetes 13 years ago. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/02/indonesia-railroad-therapy_n_915911.html
